Moctezuma’s revenge
Press To Read the Story
Montezuma’s revenge, or the Aztec curse, is referred to the condition of diarrhea and other symptoms that happen to first world travelers, especially Spanish travelers, when visiting Mexico. It is a bacterial illness, always uncomfortable, and occasionally serious. Most cases are caused by the E. coli bacterium.
Montezuma was a Mexican emperor, at the time when Spanish colonialist Hernando Cortz invaded Mexico and began their conquest of the Aztec Empire. The mexican surrendered and did not fight the Spanish colonials. As Cortez marched towards the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, on the same site as today’s Mexico City, defeating other Mexican tribes, the Aztec King Montezuma , welcomed Cortez into the city as his guest. But Cortez put the king in prison and the colonisation the rule of the Catholic Church had begun. The indigenous population had a surprise for Cortez and his army. The only revenge taken by Montezuma that anyone will tell you about is, of the dire effects suffered by foreign tourists, whoa are unaccustomed to Mexico’s food and water.
There are many stories that narrate the main reason why Moctezuma did not fight the Spanish colonists. A recent research showed that there were two main reasons for the surrender of the Spanish soldiers. The first reason is the old belief of “the white god” who would descend among them and that they should be ready at all times to welcome him. Montezuma may have believed Cortez, with his pale European skin, was the returning white god and his arrival therefore, a celestial gift. The other reason was that how Spanish soldiers intimidated the indigenous people with their firearms, and weapons that were new to the aztecs to see, in particular the horses they rode. Тhe Aztecs did finally lose their illusions about their visitors and mounted a rebellion in June 1520 and forced the Spanish to escape the city.
The revenge element alludes to the supposed hostile attitude of colonies, which are now, in this small but effective way, getting their own back. Mexico is not the only place that has this myth. There are many other countries that were colonized before, and now are very attractive destinations for tourists all over the world. Countries such as Indonesia, Egypt and India have the same myth. Tourists who go to Egypt may read about The Cairo Two-step, Pharaoh’s Revenge. In India, another myth exists of the same kind called Gandhi’s revenge or Delhi Belly.
